U.S. Senate Holds Hearing on Strengthening Federal Substance Use Disorder Programs; End Substance Use Disorder Responds

Today, the U.S. Senate held a hearing on Strengthening Federal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Programs. The hearing was held in front of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. End Substance Use Disorder released the following statement:

“We are thankful to Chair Patty Murray, Ranking Member Richard Burr, and the members of the Senate HELP Committee for emphasizing the need to act to protect our loved ones from substance use disorder and overdoses,” said Erin Schanning, president of End Substance Use Disorder. “With more than 100,000 Americans dying every year from drug overdoses and millions more suffering without access to treatment, the time to pass comprehensive solutions to save lives and support recovery is now. We urge the Senate to act quickly to pass legislation to extend hope and healing to those in need.”

The Committee hearing featured legislation that End Substance Use Disorder is leading to prevent overdoses, increase access to treatment, and reduce stigma. Sen. Maggie Hassan highlighted her work on the Mainstreaming Addiction Treatment Act with Sen. Lisa Murkowksi. In addition, Chair Patty Murray emphasized the need to expand access to medications for opioid use disorder, especially to help address rising overdoses among communities of color.

Congress is expected to vote on major legislation to address the overdose and substance use disorder crisis this session. End Substance Use Disorder is working closely with bipartisan members of Congress and the White House to encourage them to pass comprehensive solutions to save lives and promote healing.
