End Substance Use Disorder Statement on Pride Month
End Substance Use Disorder released a statement today to recognize the start of Pride Month and to call attention to the disproportionate impact of substance use disorder on the LGBTQIA community:
“We all deserve to feel at home and safe in our communities without facing stigma or shame,” said Erin Schanning, president of End Substance Use Disorder. “Discrimination against our LGBTQIA loved ones causes anguish and elevated rates of substance use disorder. To help prevent substance use disorder, we must ensure our laws affirm the dignity and equality of all. We urge lawmakers to act this Pride Month and pass laws that protect our LGBTQIA neighbors and create equal access to the prevention, treatment, and recovery supports we all need to be well.”
The LGBTQIA community suffers from high rates of substance use disorder and often lacks access to care delivered with understanding and compassion for their unique experiences. People who identify as LGBTQIA are up to 3 times as likely to have a substance use disorder. Improving access to recovery professionals and communities that support LGBTQIA people is essential to their safety and wellbeing.
This June, End Substance Use Disorder recognizes the strength and resilience of LGBTQIA leaders in challenging discriminatory laws and creating a sense of belonging for all Americans, regardless of who we love. We call on lawmakers to act this Pride Month and protect our LGBTQIA neighbors from violence, mental anguish, and discrimination. We all deserve peace of mind.
