End Substance Use Disorder Statement on National Recovery Month

End Substance Use Disorder released a statement today to recognize National Recovery Month and to call attention to the need to expand access to treatment and recovery supports:

"Recovery should be accessible to everyone. Every community should have the infrastructure to support healing from substance use disorder,” said Erin Schanning, president of End Substance Use Disorder. “Millions of Americans currently live in recovery from substance use disorder, showing that - with the right support and services - everyone with this condition can get better. We urge lawmakers to act during this National Recovery Month and pass laws to ensure treatment and recovery supports like housing, jobs, and education are available to all.”

Over 22 million Americans are in recovery from substance use disorder. While millions have healed, another 23 million are currently struggling with the condition. Fewer than 1 in 10 people with substance use disorder receive any form of treatment. Building universal access to proven treatments and recovery supports is essential to keeping our loved ones safe.

This September, End Substance Use Disorder celebrates the inspiring stories of Americans from all walks of life who are in recovery. We call on lawmakers to act this National Recovery Month and end the stigma and discrimination towards people with substance use disorder by opening access to treatment, housing, employment, and education. We should all have access to the support we need to be well regardless of our medical condition, income, or background.
