End Substance Use Disorder Congratulates Dr. Miriam Delphin-Rittmon on Her Confirmation to SAMHSA

Today, the United States Senate confirmed Dr. Miriam Delphin-Rittmon as the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use. In this position, Assistant Secretary Delphin-Rittmon will lead the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which oversees the federal efforts to address substance use disorder.

"Assistant Secretary Delphin-Rittmon will save lives and protect our families from the pain of overdoses and substance use disorder that is devastating our country” said Erin Schanning, president of End Substance Use Disorder. “We look forward to standing with Dr. Delphin-Rittmon as she leads the federal response to build access to prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery supports for all communities in need.”

SAMHSA is critical for addressing the overdose crisis in the United States. The agency oversees millions of dollars in federal grants to substance use disorder programs nationwide and educates the healthcare providers and the public on evidence-based treatments.

Dr. Delphin-Rittmon led Connecticut’s mental health and addiction services agency and previously served as a policy advisor in SAMHSA under President Barack Obama, where she focused on behavioral health equity, workforce development, and healthcare reform.

Dr. Delphin-Rittmon has called for equity in access to evidence-based harm reduction and treatment supports.
